Dear Windham Northeast Community,

At WNESU we have a mission statement that includes specific beliefs about learning. Three of these statements are particularly significant at this moment in time.

    • We want to create a challenging learning environment that encourages high expectations for success through developmentally appropriate instruction that allows for individual differences and learning styles.
    • Our schools promote a safe, orderly, caring, and supportive environment.
    • Each student’s self-esteem is fostered by positive relationships with students and staff.

As educators, when we strive to achieve our mission and provide the highest possible quality of education for our student body, we must acknowledge and discuss the issues that separate instead of unite our school community.  If we want our students to become critical thinkers and active citizens of the world, we must discuss the history of systemic racism in our country and acknowledge the obstacles that are present in society for black Americans, and for other categories which are protected by harassment policy. These obstacles are nationwide, community wide, and are unfortunately present in our school community. We have to recognize that while these obstacles are not intentional or purposeful, we need to actively dismantle them for our students. It is important that we work in unity to recognize these barriers, that we create awareness of these barriers, and most importantly, that we remove them in our BFUHS community and actively work towards dismantling systemic racism and bias. We need to support and empower our students of color, and create a culture where all of our students have obvious, equal opportunities.

To that end, we have created this website as a clearinghouse of information and activity related to  diversity and equity at WNESU. We hope staff will be given time to read, consider and discuss materials and ideas from this developing resource.

Kind regards,

The WNESU Diversity and Equity Committee
