Thank you for sharing your thoughts and memories of the Okemo Winter Sports program.
I believe you were given misinformation based on some social media posting. We are continuing to have a Winter Sports program at SRES and using the long-standing January until February winter recess time calendar for Winter Sports. The 75 students in grades 1-4 took a survey home in November while we waited to hear information from Vail, the new owners of Okemo. Only 21 students showed an interest in the ski program while both ice skating and swimming had more interest by our pupils.
The Rockingham schools have a Sunday ski program. This year the program will allow the students to ski from late January through the end of March. That way, students will have the opportunity to grow through skiing and also experience five opportunities to free swim or take swim lessons or go skating with lots of members of our school community. We are looking to provide lots of Winter Sports experiences for local kids.
I have a ski pass to Okemo as my husband teaches part-time in the ski school. I am a Sunday skier and look forward to seeing our students who want to participate in that program on the mountain. We have enjoyed knowing the Mueller family for many years and appreciate how wonderful they have been to all of Vermont’s school children in providing the opportunity for many to learn to ski.
Thank you for reaching out and trying to understand the opportunities being provided to Saxtons River students. I appreciate the chance to correct misunderstandings.
